By Joel Feldman reprinted from the BURN FOUNDATION NEWS FALL 2010

Reaching out to those who have suffered a loss, including a burn injury, may be difficult, but it can be so helpful to survivors and their families. There is also an incredible benefit for those who do reach out. Hearing how others, facing incredible challenges, meet those challenges quickly puts our own lives in perspective. We learn what is important, are grateful for what we have and can be inspired to do better in our own lives.

Anapol Schwartz Foundation History

Tuesday, November 9th, 2010

After more than thirty years of representing victims and their families, in 2007 we established the Anapol Schwartz Foundation in order to give back to the community that we serve . We take a portion of our fees from settled cases and , through our Foundation, donate those funds to local charitable organizations that make a difference in their  communities. We search for charities that have a connection with the cases that we settle or that help those who face obstacles similar to those faced by our clients and their families.

To date we have contributed more than $ 200,000 to various charities in the region. From a case involving horrific burn injuries to a little boy we helped create a mentorship program with the Burn Foundation that pairs burn victims with burn survivors and purchased a pediatric crib for Crozer Chester Hospital’s burn unit. From cases involving death to young people from service of alcohol to those intoxicated we have worked with MADD and sponsored Death Notification classes in the Philadelphia suburbs and in Philadelphia to provide training for those who are called upon to tell families that a loved one has died. Plaintiffs Firms Are Finding Ways to Give Back

Tuesday, August 24th, 2010

The Legal Intelligencer, August 2010 writes about Philadelphia law firms and their efforts to give back to the community.

The article features Anapol Schwartz, and their charitable work in Philadelphia through the Anapol Schwartz Foundation which has granted more than $200,000 to local organizations and 501(c)(3) public charities, including Mothers Against Drunk Driving, Northern Home for Children, Susan G. Komen for the Cure Philadelphia, the Make-A-Wish Foundation, the Caren Sydnor Locomotor Training Fund, the Burn Foundation and the Nathan Speare Regional Burn Treatment Center at Crozer-Chester Medical Center.

Joel Feldman a managing partner at Anapol Schwartz , is quoted saying,  ”It was a natural progression” for the firm. “We were involved in charitable work in the local community for some time. Starting the foundation made sense to us because we represented clients who had suffered terrible injuries, and there were many other people who had suffered the same but did not have cases and did not have help.”

Law Firm’s $50,000 Donation Will “Pick Up Where Insurance Leaves Off”

PHILADELPHIA – May 18, 2010 – Philadelphia-based civil justice law firm Anapol Schwartz recently donated $50,000 through its foundation to Magee Rehabilitation Hospital, the area’s leading rehabilitation hospital for individuals who have suffered traumatic, life changing injuries, such as brain or spinal cord injuries, strokes, or amputations. Anapol Schwartz made the gift to establish a fund that will aid amputees in obtaining necessary items and training – such as wheelchairs, home modifications, and driving lessons – that often present a financial burden, as well as smaller quality of life items, such as prosthetic cleaning products and diabetic socks and shoes.

“It is very common for our patients to have needs that are not covered by insurance, often leaving them with difficult decisions to face and tough challenges to overcome,” said Mark Chilutti, assistant vice president of development. “A fund like this, which picks up where insurance leaves off, can really help our patients through those challenges and allow them to live healthy, active, and productive lives, while worrying less about financial challenges they face.”

According to Chilutti, Magee’s case managers, doctors, nurses, and therapists are aware of the fund and will help patients seek support from it.

“One of our doctors said that, for the first time in her career, she felt like Santa Claus, being able to help in a way she never could before, thanks to the fund,” Chilutti said.

As Anapol Schwartz continues to win cases on behalf of clients and their families, it will designate a portion of its fees to The Anapol Schwartz Foundation (ASF) to support nonprofits that are important to its clients. The recent gift to Magee came from a case in which the firm secured a settlement for an amputee.

“In everything our firm does, we’re striving to help victims affected by disabling injuries,” said Joel Feldman, managing partner of Anapol Schwartz. “We’re proud to partner with Magee in this effort to improve the lives of amputees in our region.”

Since its inception in 2008, The ASF has granted more than $180,000 to local 501(c)(3) public charities, including Mothers Against Drunk Driving, Northern Home for Children, Make a Wish Foundation, the Caren Sydnor Locomotor Training Fund (through the Magee Rehabilitation Hospital Foundation), the Burn Foundation, and, through its Anapol Advocate Award, the Nathan Speare Regional Burn Treatment Center at Crozer-Chester Medical Center.

Founded in 1977, Anapol Schwartz, P.C., is a civil justice law firm with more than 25 attorneys and law offices in Philadelphia, Media, Reading and Harrisburg, Pa., as well as Cherry Hill, N.J. and Wheeling, W.Va., and co-counsel in Ohio. The firm has represented consumers in matters ranging from dangerous prescription drugs and medical negligence to unsafe products and hazardous work site cases.
